AIB US Southeast Fellow
Dr. Daniel Rottig is Associate Professor of International Business and Strategic Management in the Management Department of the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University, USA. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Management with emphasis on Global Strategy and International Business, an MBA degree in International Business, an undergraduate degree (German Diploma) in Business Administration with the triadic emphases on International Economics, Finance, and Marketing, and a Diploma in International Studies.
Dr. Rottig’s research focuses on the institutional and cultural environments of multinational corporations, the performance determinants of international acquisitions, emerging markets, and global social and ethical organizational issues. He has published in Management International Review, Thunderbird International Business Review, Decision Sciences Journal, the Academy of Management Learning and Education and other respected outlets. Five of his papers are published in the highly selective Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. He has received several awards and award-nominations for his scholarly work from leading academic institutions, including the Richard Farmer Best Dissertation Award of the Academy of International Business, two consecutive William Ziegler Best Paper Awards from the Academy of International Business Southeast Chapter (AIB-SE), nominations for AIB-SE’s Rollins Best Paper Award and EducAsian Best Thematic Paper Award on Emerging Markets Research, as well as nominations for the Academy of Management’s International Management Division Barry Richman Best Dissertation Award, SKOLKOVO Best Division Paper Award, SERI Best Paper in Strategy/International Business Theory Award, Douglas Nigh Best Paper Award, and Best Paper in OB/HRM/OT Award.
Prof. Rottig is a passionate educator whose goal is to help students understand the global business environment and how to strategically manage firms in international markets. He teaches in the Lutgert College of Business at Florida Gulf Coast University, in the Executive MBA program at Florida Atlantic University and he has taught in the graduate and executive programs at California State University, Long Beach, in the post-graduate program at the at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) as a visiting faculty, and in the doctoral program at Abu Dhabi University in the UAE as an external reviewer and dissertation advisor.
He is actively involved in the academic community and currently serves as the Editor of the Academy of International Business Insights and as an Area Editor of the International Journal of Emerging Markets. He also serves as a guest editor, member of the editorial review board and active reviewer for a number of leading academic journals and conferences, which shows in the form of several Best Reviewer Awards.
Dr. Rottig has been an active member of AIB-SE since 2005. He has won two consecutive William J. Ziegler Best Paper Awards, a Best Reviewer Award, and his scholarly work was nominated for the Rollins Best Paper Award and EducAsian Best Thematic Paper Award on Emerging Markets Research. He has served on the executive board in various roles including development director, membership director, conference co-chair, conference chair, and chapter chairman from 2009-2014. During his tenure on the executive board, he was instrumental in growing and further institutionalizing the chapter, which has become one of the leading chapter organizations of the Academy of International Business with hundreds of conference participants from more than 40 countries representing 6 continents under his leadership. He was also instrumental in developing the relationship between AIB-SE and the X-Culture International Student Collaboration Project, which has become a stable pillar of AIB-SE’s annual conferences since 2012. Dr. Rottig’s students have consistently been selected as finalists for the annual X-Culture challenges, and he had a student on the winning team at the 2013 Home Depot X-Culture Challenge at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA and at the 2014 Louis Vuitton X-Culture Challenge at Florida International University in Miami, FL, and a student on a finalist team at the 2015 JCB X-Culture Challenge at Savannah State University in Savannah, GA. Furthermore, over the years, Dr. Rottig has involved more than 50 of his students into the annual conferences as authors of conference papers, and his students have been selected as finalists for the Best Student Reviewer Award as well as Best Student Paper Awards in several years, and won the Monmouth University Best Master’s Student Paper Award in 2014. He was inducted as the youngest Fellow in AIB-SE’s long history in 2013.
Prior to beginning his career in academia, he worked for such companies as Merrill Lynch in the United States and ING Group in Europe. He also served as chairman of a German business consultancy, and he embarked upon an entrepreneurial venture as co-founder and consultant of a Germany-based company. He is an invited member of several honor societies, including The International Honor Society of Beta Gamma Sigma, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International Honour Society. He was born and raised in Germany and, while studying and working in the fields of international business and strategic management, he had the opportunity to travel extensively and thus far has visited more than 50 countries.
